How We Calculate Take Home Pay

Every calculator follows the same method: start from gross salary, take off the taxes and contributions that apply, and show the rest as take home pay.

What every calculator assumes

One employee with one job and no other income, on the standard tax code, claiming the standard allowances and credits only. Results are for the tax year shown. They are estimates, so your payslip can differ if your situation is more complicated, for example with several jobs, benefits in kind, tax code adjustments, dependants or other income.

How we check

Rates, thresholds and allowances are taken from the tax authority's own publications. Each country has a set of hand worked examples that the calculator must match before the site is built, and a link check runs on every build.

Marginal rate

The marginal rate on each page is the share of your next extra unit of pay that goes in tax and contributions. We measure it by adding a small amount to the salary and seeing how the total deductions change, so it includes effects such as allowances being withdrawn.
